Christmas Shopping Evening at Brook near Godalming
Our Christmas Shopping Evening at the Pirrie Hall at Brook on the main road between Milford and Haslemere is on Wednesday November 11th (6.30p.m. - 9p.m.) and is raising money for the Surrey Care Trust' Crisis Grants Fund. Features a Christmas Market with goodies and gifts galore, a What the Dickens? festive quiz, guess the weight of the Christmas pudding, music from the In Accord singers. It is also a chance to buy raffle tickets to win Judith's Quilt... a beautiful piece of craft work made especially for us by one of our supporters. Pirrie Hall is opposite the Dog & Pheasant and the pub has kindly offered vouchers for all our guests entitling them to a free glass of wine if they have a two-course meal there that night. Call 01483 426990 and ask to speak to Chris Padmore to find out more.

    Local History
Godalming is full of narrow streets and interesting buildings, but often bypassed by car. Situated in the valleys of the Rivers Wey and Ock, it is first mentioned in the will of King Alfred, about 880 AD. By Doomsday in 1086, the village was relatively wealthy. It prospered as a market area during the Middle Ages and progressed into a centre for the wool and cloth trade by the 16th century. When the main road from London to Portsmouth opened in 1749, Godalming was 'en-route'. In 1881, it became the first town in the world to have a public electricity supply.
