|
| In the North-West
of Surrey, Staines is situated on the River Thames which is used by
ferry companies for summer sailings to Windsor in the west and Hampton
Court to the east. An old market town and crossing point, Staines
still has an outdoor market on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the High
Street. It also has two indoor shopping centres as well as the
original High Street shops. The Old Town Hall Arts Centre (formerly
Staines Town Hall) is used as a venue for various entertainments,
workshops and classes. |

Egham, 6 miles east of Windsor and adjoining Staines has a local
history museum at the Literary Institute in the High Street.
Rich in history of the
13th century, there is a monument to King John at one end of the precinct.

It was in 1215 at Riverside Meadows, Runnymede, Egham that King John signed the Magna
Carter.
A memorial was built on the site to commemorate this event.
This attractive
countryside area also has a memorial dedicated to President John F. Kennedy and at the top
of Cooper's Hill, one to the Air Forces.
