Watts Gallery Gets a Makeover

After an £11.5m revamp the Watts Gallery in Compton has been restored to its former glory.

Over 100 years after the gallery had first opened it was deemed in 2004 that the condition of the building had deteriorated so severely it was "at risk". The gallery was re-opened on Saturday the 18th of June and can now be described a as a building befitting the exquisite and masterful contents it has to offer.

The Watts collection holding about 6,000 pieces including 250 oil paintings, 800 drawings and watercolours and 200 sculptures. However the gallery can now boast artwork on loan from Tate Britain and the centrepiece of another exhibition, one of the most influential artworks today and probably Watt's most famous painting, barrack Obama's favourite painting on loan from a private collector "Hope".

You can visit the Gallery at Down Lane, Compton, Guildford?, Surrey, GU3 1DQ on Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 5pm or on Sunday from 1pm to 5pm.

If you want a more active day out try taking a walk form Guildford to Compton Passing by Watts Gallery.
