We've all experienced the bad weather in Surrey over the past few weeks, many of us have been caught out by sudden summer downpours and more recently, electrical storms. But fortunately few of us will ever be directly affected by lightning and most of us don't expect to encounter such a rare event in our lifetime. So when lightning strikes an 80ft tall tree, just feet from a house in Barrow Hill Close, Worcester Park, you wouldn't want to be inside or anywhere else near for that matter. But that's exactly what happened on a Thursday night at 10:50pm. As the owners of the house slept, the 80ft giant Redwood was struck by lightning and split apart - sending it crashing into the nearby roof, causing damage to the ceiling of the building.
Two parked cars were also damaged, one of which took a direct hit from the fallen tree but thankfully no one was injured in the freak accident and the house was quickly evacuated while local emergency services made sure the building was safe.
