Weybridge Green Belt Under Threat

Weybridge Green Belt Under Threat

Weybridge residents have sent a 164-signature strong petition to the council to try to protect their green spaces from over-development.

At a meeting of the Weybridge Society last month, attended by 350 people, including Weybridge MP Philip Hammond, residents were asked to fill in a questionnaire in response to Elmbridge Borough Council’s Core Strategy.

The Core Strategy followed the government’s South East Plan for the next 17 years of residential development and calls for 900 homes to be built in Weybridge by 2026.

Of the 4,333 homes to be built throughout the borough, the plans for Weybridge are some of the most dramatic. More than 150 people completed the questionnaire, which was delivered to the council offices on Monday (August 10).

Peter Vey, a member of the Weybridge Society, said: “The society challenges the council’s assurance that targets for new dwellings can be met without development in the Green Belt. It says that the down turn in the housing market will mean that insufficient applications for developing urban sites will be forthcoming to meet the targets. Developers may deliberately hold back putting forward applications for small urban sites preferring to develop on larger and easier sites in the Green Belt".

What a bunch of c.... This is amazing how stupid they are - there is a lot of space in Weybridge which is not properly used so they decided to demolish remaining parts of well preserved greens. By the way steps should be as follow: 1) Check sustainability of the particular area (show me research why 900 is correct number) 2) build infrastructure (schools, health centres), improve communication (try to imagine 900 more people in the morning on Weybridge station or 900 more cars in the morning on seven Hills Road) 3) Use properties which are unused - currently of the market - to create living space 4) Plan urban estate structure to be flexible in the meaning of further developments in the future 5) build the property to the local comunity needs not to political need of the current goverment.
