September is an exciting time for us as the
British Science Festival comes to Surrey just in time for the start of the academic year. The British Science Festival is one of the UK's biggest Science Festivals. Annually, it attracts around 400 of the best scientists and science communicators from home and abroad, where they reveal the latest developments in research.
In a
previous article about science in Surrey, we have already recognised the talent in this area with Danish-born Aerospace Engineer Dr Andreas Mogensen, currently employed at the Surrey Space Centre - University of Surrey - has been appointed as a new european space agency (ESA) astronaut. Dr Abhay Rane conducted surgery through incision in the belly button for the very first time in Europe in March 2008 in Redhill and Ben Atkinsson-Willes from Kingston University designed Activity Dementia Puzzles for those suffering with the illness.
Aside from these, The Biritsh Science Festival highlights that there are many large scientific organisations and companies found throughout Surrey including the Surrey Research Park owned by the University which is a major centre for excellence in technology, science, and engineering.
Engineering, Science and applied aspects of the humanities are courses offered by the University of Surrey via Surrey Research Park which work closely with the industry. The University of Surrey has extensive research contracts and links with industry and the Surrey Research Park was originally promoted to extend this important policy of cooperation with industry.
With these factors considered it makes sense for the festival to finally visit Surrey. After all it's taken
178 years!
